Planning Your York Hen Weekend
Regarded by many as Britain’s most beautiful city, for a hen party, York is a perfect destination. The city makes a beautiful base for your hen do, with quaint streets, awe-inspiring architecture, and lots to keep you entertained – including Charm School’s fabulous hen party dance classes!
Much of central York is pedestrianised, and there are more attractions per square mile within its ancient walled centre than any other UK destination. York’s top visitor attraction is of course York Minster, one of the world’s most magnificent cathedrals. For the fit, you can walk up the spiral staircase and take in views over York’s rooftops. For more gorgeous views, head to Clifford’s Tower – looking over York and the moors, it makes it an incredible spot for a picnic on a sunny day. The tower is almost all that remains of York Castle, and, built by William the Conqueror, it’s a proud symbol of the power of England’s medieval kings. York Castle Museum is nearby, with the enchanting recreated Victorian street, Kirkgate.
Jorvik Viking Centre is another ‘must see’ – enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of Viking life as you travel in time capsules through an authentic recreation of a Viking city on the site of real life Viking city Jorvik, discovered by archaeologists 35 years ago. Another of York’s top attractions is the National Railway Museum – it’s the world’s largest railway museum, and you can explore the giant halls full of trains, hop on board and watch engineers at work. For those who like their museums sweeter, take a visit to York’s Chocolate Story and enjoy a mouth-watering journey through the history of the chocolate industry in York – did you know Smarties, Kit-Kat and Aero all began their lives here? York’s Chocolate Trail takes you on a walking tour round the city’s streets, with a few delicious stops for connoisseurs – check out Betty’s Cafe and York Cocoa House for some sweet treats.
If you fancy taking the weight off your feet, you can explore the city by bus or boat – YorkBoat offers trips down the River Ouse, giving you a chance to take in the sights and enjoy a drink from the on board bar.
York is home to one of the largest mazes in the world – get lost in the 1.5 million maize plants at York Maze.
York’s is also one of the most haunted city in the world! – for those feeling brave, take a walking tour on the Ghost Hunt of York and see if you can spot any spectres. York Terror Trail, a historic tour of the grim and gruesome, is also not for the faint-hearted!
For shoppers, York has many excellent shops and boutiques – with its cobbled shopping streets, it has a great mix of high street stores, vintage shops and independent boutiques. Purple Haze has two floors of vintage clothing for you to browse, while The Inkwell sells pop culture curios and retro gifts. The Cat Gallery is a cat themed shop and sells gifts for cats and cat lovers! The Shambles is a city centre street dating from medieval times, which is one of the most photographed streets in England, and the most visited street in Europe! This narrow cobbled street was originally home to butcher shops and now houses many curiosity shops.
