Your Limerick Hen Weekend
County Limerick is rich in history, has a beautiful landscape and is filled with perfect Irish pubs that make it quintessentially Irish. The breath-taking Ballyhoura Mountains dominate the south-east of the country, and much of the countryside is filled with sites of historic significance. Dotted around the county are towns like historic Kilmallock, and picturesque villages like Castleconnell and Adare. Hen parties can experience the best of Ireland in this county, and groups who want some Irish city living should head to Limerick City.
Easily accessible by air (Shannon Airport is 24km away), Limerick city is a great hen party location, whether you like history, nightlife, culture, shopping, or a good pint of Guinness. With the River Shannon running through the city, Limerick is beautiful. The city centre has three main areas; the first, English Town, which includes King John’s Castle, is on the southern end of King’s Island. The second is Irish Town, which encompasses the south bank’s older streets; and the third is the economic centre of the city, Newton Perry.
History buffs have plenty to choose from in Limerick. They can head to St Mary’s Cathedral, founded in 1168, then stay medieval and take a look at King John’s Castle dating from the 13th century. Right next door to the main castle entrance is the Limerick City Museum which gives you a background to the history of the city. To get a great overview of Limerick’s history, take an ‘Angela’s Ashes’ walking tour of the city – Frank McCourt fans should also make a beeline for the museum dedicated to his work – or take a boat trip down the River Shannon.
Culture vultures have plenty to choose from in Limerick. The Belltable Arts Centre is great for seeing local theatre, music and comedy. The University Concert Hall plays host to international acts, and if street theatre is more your thing, Janzo Street Arts and The Umbrella Project are local companies who perform street theatre at its best.
Shoppers have the usual selection of high street brands, but for a shopping trip with a difference take a trip to the Milk Market. Situated in the Cornmarket Row, the market, which was revamped in 2010, offers a vast array of locally produced food, fashion, antiques and arts and crafts. One of the oldest markets in the country, it’s a great place to browse and taste the best the county has to offer.
Limerick also offers the best in Irish hospitality, so hen parties are guaranteed a great night out. Peter Clohessy’s Bar offers live music and sport, and nightclub the Sin Bin downstairs with VIP rooms. Dolan’s Pub is a true Irish pub with great entertainment. George’s Quay houses the Locke Bar Seafood Pub, where you can sip a glass of wine and enjoy the stunning riverside. Smyth’s Bar and Icon Nightclub are also popular choices for a drink and boogie.
