With a host of designer boutiques gracing the Merchant City area of Glasgow, you can find everything from Jimmy Choos to Armani suits a stone’s throw from each other, as well as some sophisticated watering holes like the opulent Corinthian to take a well earned break from shopping. Away from the sleek Merchant City area towards the west lies the more bohemian West End where you find an array of local designers displaying Glasgow’s notorious creativity for that special one-off creation.
Glasgow’s West End is home to one of Scotland’s oldest universities. Built in 1451, the University of Glasgow dominates the West End of the city, and the area around Byres Road has become home to a lively community of students and academics who can be found drinking in the quaint Ruthven Lane, opposite the trendy Ashton Lane, famous for the Chip Pub. The city houses the Glasgow Art School; one of the foremost centres for learning the visual arts in Europe, the school’s building itself was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It is also home of the Scottish Conservatoire (formerly the RSAMD) whose graduates include Robbie Coltrane and James McAvoy.
Glasgow’s nightlife is famed for being as colourful as its people. Music fans head to the SECC which hosts stadium-style concerts, pulling big names such as Bon Jovi, or to the world renowned King Tut’s where many of the big names of today first took to the stage. The West End has the bohemian pubs including the beautiful Oran Mor, while the Merchant City offers the trendy crowd an assortment of cocktail bars to drink in.
